James, the eldest of three children, lost his mother to a chronic illness and was left under the care of his grandmother, who supports 16 children. She relies on farm work to provide, but they often survive on just one meal a day. To help, James sold firewood, worked on farms for food, and grazed livestock during school holidays. Now that his needs are being met at Tumaini, his greatest focus is on education, which he believes will transform his life.
